Listmas 2021: Top 5 Lists I'm NOT Doing This Year

Welcome to Listmas 2021, my experiment to see if I can handle semi-regular updates. I plan on posting one of these every other day, then slowing back down to a couple a month if I have something to say.

Here's how we do things here. My lists come in two flavors: Top 11 and Multiples of 5. I find Top 11 to be vastly superior to Top 10, the one and only worthwhile contribution Doug Walker ever gave society (told you some of my older posts would age like buttermilk). But sometimes I have far more or far less so I otherwise keep it to Multiples of 5.

Some lists will just be lists from top to bottom with no further explanation. Other times when I have more to say and want to indulge in some dramatic tension, I'll go for a more countdown-oriented model. Some posts will be several lists surrounding a topic and other posts will focus on just one.

Today's list will be a single short countdown: The Top 5 Lists I'm NOT Doing This Year

GM16: The Semi-Final Victors

We're ramping up for the end here, so let's not waste any time. You have spoken. These are your champions.

The Victors for the Geekdom Madness Semi-Final are...

Captain Jack Sparrow
"You will always remember this as the day you almost caught...Captain Jack Sparrow!"

With 6 out of 9 votes (66%), he yo-hoed Yoda. He has what it takes.

and...

Maleficent
"You poor simple fools! Thinking you could defeat me...ME! The mistress of all evil!"
With 4 out of 8 votes (50%) and a tiebreaker die roll of 14 to her opponent's abysmal 1, she riddled the Riddler. She has what it takes.

Here's the breakdown. Tomorrow, the Geekdom Madness 2016 Final!

I thought that was going to go 100% the opposite way

GM16 - QF: Emerald Elves/R&R Victors

Close, but no cigar.

The Victors for the first round of the Quarter Finals and the first of our Elite Four are...

Yoda
"Much to learn, you still have."
and...
The Riddler
"Riddle me this: I have billions of eyes, yet I live in darkness. I have millions of ears, yet only four lobes. I have no muscle, yet I rule two hemispheres. What am I?"

In another week when the vote count differs between matches, Yoda won Match 1 with 5 votes out of 8 (62%), while the Riddler won Match 2 with 4 votes out of 7 (57%)

Here's the breakdown. Check back tomorrow!

Geekdom Madness 2016 - Quarter Final: Emerald Elves/R&R

Welcome to the Geekdom Madness 2016 Quarter-Finals! Our past losers have been ruthlessly proving themselves winners in their own right, and now we see who gets to be in the Elite Four!

GM16: Tall, Dark, and Moody/Mind Games Victors

Sorry for the delay, I'm still struggling to get back on any sort of schedule. Then again, given the lackluster voting numbers, we all may be.

The Victors for the second round of the preliminaries are...

Severus Snape
"Clearly, fame isn't everything"

and...

The Riddler
"Riddle me this: The poor have it, the rich need it, and if you eat it you'll die. What is it?"

Snape won 5 votes out of 7 (71%), and the Riddler snagged 4 out of 6 (66%). Some of our lower numbers, but we're just getting going.

Now, let's hang our heads as Geekdom Madness bids a final farewell to Lt. Worf ("There is nothing shameful in falling to a superior enemy.") and Jean Grey ("It's better this way. Quick. Clean. Final.")

Here's the breakdown. Check back tomorrow!

GM15 - QF: Super Showdown/Back in Black Victors

Alright folks. We're doing things a little differently. We're giving you the vote tallies BEFORE we announce the victors.

Both matches had a total of 8 votes. Match 1 was a runaway 6/2 (75%/25%). The other was again, surprise surprise, a dead tie (4/4, 50%/50%, etc).

I pulled out my dice again. At first I decided to do best two out of three, but then decided that wasn't fair - I had never done that with the other ties. Therefore, in the end, I have to go with my original rolls: 17 to 2.

The Victors for the first round of the Quarter Final, and the first of 2015's Elite Four are...

The Powerpuff Girls
"And once again the day...is saved!"

and...

Abby Sciuto
"Never forget: I am one of the few people in this world who can murder you and leave no forensic evidence."

That means that Abby has tied with, and luckily broken a tie against, two VERY widely recognized geek icons in The Penguin and Charizard. One must wonder if this streak will continue.

Here's the breakdown. Check back tomorrow!

Can't believe there are just three more weeks

Geekdom Madness 2015 - Quarter Final: Super Showdown/Back in Black

Welcome to the Geekdom Madness 2015 Quarter Final! Y'know, doing the two polls per week has really expedited this process - at this point last year, we weren't even done with the preliminaries! So, without further ado, bring on the Quarter Finals!

GM15 TRG: Rhapsody in Purple/Umbrellas Victors

How comical.

The Victors for the first round of The Real Game are...

Nightcrawler
"*BAMF!*"

and...

The Penguin
"But what it all comes down to is: who's holding the umbrella?"

Two close matches with uneven numbers of votes. Match 1 had 9 votes with Nightcrawler beating Donatello 5/4 (55%/45%). Match 2 had 8 votes, with Penguin beating Lexington 5/3 (62%/38%). The comics win.

Here's the breakdown. Check back tomorrow!

So Pengers has made it at least as far as Catwoman.

GM15: X Marks the Spot/Gotham Rogues Victors

Only seven of you care about these, eh?

The Victors for the second round of the preliminaries are...

Nightcrawler
*BAMF!*

and...

The Penguin
"But what it all comes down to is: who's holding the umbrella?"

Out of seven votes each, Penguin easily handled Riddler 5 (72%) to 2 (28%). However, Jean and Nightcrawler were neck and neck until a single vote pushed it in Nightcrawler's favor, giving him 4 votes (57%) to Jean's 3 (43%)

Here's the breakdown. Check back tomorrow!

FYI, fixed a typo to one of tomorrow's contestants. You're welcome.

Geekdom Madness: TRG - Secret Crises on Infinate Wars Victor

This was really really close. It was actually the first in a while that was tied at one-point. But even with the early poll closing, some last-minute votes squeaked by, and there can be only one.

The Victor for the third round of The Real Game is...

Catwoman
"Meow"

Thought they were often neck and neck, our feisty feline kept pulling ahead, and at the end of the day out of the 10 votes total she recieved 60% of the vote to Deadpool's 40%.

Here's the breakdown. Check back tomorrow!

Can you think of a sonnet? Or a...dirty limerick?

Geekdom Madness: Distinguished Competitors Victor

Like I promised, this is going up a little early. I was hoping the issues with the polls would resolve themselves, but sadly that's not the case. However, I had enough data from before to call this match.

The victor for the seventh round of the preliminaries is:

Catwoman
"Meow."
Before the poll went haywire, the results set the records for both lowest turnout and most one-sided fight. Only 5 votes were counted, 100% of them going to Catwoman. Rorschach didn't get a single vote, at least not before Blogger ate the previously counted votes.

I'm going to experiment with the polling widgets some more, see if Blogger's is still not working, see if there's a third party I can use. Either way, I'm going to do my damnedest to make sure the competition continues this Sunday like normal, so check back at the normal time.

Until then, here's the breakdown:

Clicking this time will actually make it smaller and harder to read.

Whofleck?!

So no doubt by now you've all heard the news that Zach Snyder has cast Ben Affleck to play Bruce Wayne, better known as Batman, in the sequel to his Superman reboot "Man of Steel." Since everyone else in the world has already mouthed off about it, I figured I'd throw my two cents in the ring as well.

Like What You Wanna Like! Defenses of Underappreciated Films (And More!) Part 1!

Last week I asked you all to write in with media and franchises you love that seem to have a sizable hatedom (aside from I-III, since I always talk about them). I swore that I would talk a little bit about each with the following rules:

1. If I liked it too, I would praise it for its greatness.

2. If I didn't like it, I would be honest with my criticism while still emphasizing both your right to like it and its right to exist, plus finding at least one genuinely nice thing to say about it (and not dismissing it as alltogether "bad" regardless of how I feel).

3. If I haven't seen it, I'll explain why while refusing to pass too much judgement and, again, emphasizing both your right to like it and its right to exist.

You all gave me a lot of great things to talk about that fall into all three categories. You gave me so much that, while I envisioned this as a single post, Blogspot wouldn't let me put all the necessary tags on it requiring me to split it into two. This actually worked out for the best, since about half of the suggestions came from Superhero stuff. I'll start with that and give the rest of you a little more time to suggest more.

Some Spoilers ahead.
