July Anniversary

Let's take a moment to celebrate the birth of Harry James Potter. Oh, and these movies:

10 Years Old This Month
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines - A decent if bittersweet third installment of the Terminator franchise.

20 Years Old This Month
Son In Law - Probably Pauly Shore's best film (which isn't saying much, so I'll continue). This was one of the films I saw the first time I went to the drive in, and oddly enough the one that was far more memorable in a good way.
Hocus Pocus - Much as I hate holiday-themed films coming out nowhere near the holiday they're about, this was a pleasant surprise of a film. Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimi are a scream in both senses of the word.
Robin Hood: Men in Tights - My first Mel Brooks movie, and a great one at that. I still think if Marty Feldmen were alive, he'd have been cast as Blinkin.
So I Married an Axe Murderer - EXTREMELY underrated Mike Myers comedy, and probably the subtlest I've seen him.

See you in August!

  1. Oooh, this reminds me that next month is the 40th anniversary of my all-time favorite movie. I'm curious to see if that'll get a mention here next month.

    2. Jesus Christ Superstar. 1973 movie musical directed by Norman Jewison. Absolutely gorgeous film and a huuuuge influence on me as a kid.

    3. Never seen it. Sadly, growing up Jewish has made it...uncomfortable to watch Christ-y things for a long time. That being said, it's certainly on my "to-do" list due to it's fame.

You heard it here, folks. Jesus Christ Superstar is 40 this...err, did you mean August or September?

    4. August.

And though I don't know your reservations personally, I can tell you that Superstar is surprisingly non-religious...that is, it's ambiguous about its more Christian aspects such that it can be enjoyed by Christians and non-Christians alike. But even if that element doesn't appeal there's always the gorgeous cinematography and the awesome rock score.

    5. It's just been something I've had to work on getting over.
