Luna Lovegood

"Don't worry. You're just as sane as I am.

and...

Chronormu

"Hmm...haven't we done this before?"

Match 1 was a flawless victory, with Luna getting 100% of the 8 votes total. Chromie was almost as successful, garnering 7 of the 8 total votes (87%).

So now, ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Elite Four of Geekdom Madness 2017

Tomorrow, this Final Four will be whittled down to the Final Two, and after that, There Can Be Only One!

GM17 - TRG: Rough Textures/Bronzed Victors

What an explosive turnout!

The victors for the third round of The Real Game are...

The Lizard

"You need to hurry...I'm...lossssing control....."

and...

Chronormu

"Hmm....haven't we done this before?"

Chromie got a commanding lead early on and maintained it throughout despite a last-minute influx. This last minute influx however swung the lead away from Candlejack and to The Lizard, squeaking him by as the polls were closing. In the end, both Victors won with 5 votes out of a total of 9 (55%). 9 is the current record total for this year, though we've had much higher numbers in the past.

Here's the breakdown. Check back tomorrow!

Technically they're both scaly, contrary to previous descriptions.

GM17: Lego Genetics/Here Be Dragons Victors

I was getting worried there for a minute.

The Victors for the sixth round of the preliminaries are...

The Lizard

"You need to hurry...I'm...lossssing control....."

and...

Chronormu

"Hmm....haven't we done this before?"

It took several days for any of you to consider your choices, but in the end the matches turned out equal. Both Victors won their respective matches with a respectable 5 votes out of 7 total (71%).

Here's the breakdown. Check back tomorrow!

That'll get nerfed later.

GM16 - QF: Emerald Elves/R&R Victors

Close, but no cigar.

The Victors for the first round of the Quarter Finals and the first of our Elite Four are...

Yoda
"Much to learn, you still have."
and...
The Riddler
"Riddle me this: I have billions of eyes, yet I live in darkness. I have millions of ears, yet only four lobes. I have no muscle, yet I rule two hemispheres. What am I?"

In another week when the vote count differs between matches, Yoda won Match 1 with 5 votes out of 8 (62%), while the Riddler won Match 2 with 4 votes out of 7 (57%)

Here's the breakdown. Check back tomorrow!

and...

The Roadrunner
"BEEP BEEP *zip-tang!*"

While Match 1 had more overall votes than Match 2, both our Victors scored all but one, with Gobby winning 6 votes out of 7 (85%) and Roadrunner winning 4 votes out of 5 (80%).

Geekdom Madness: A Marvellous Match Victor

Wow, what a battle!

The victor for the fifth round of the preliminaries is:

Deadpool
"Do I still think in those little yellow boxes? Oooh I missed you, little yellow boxes! What FUN we shall have together!"

I had been following this poll's progress closer than most, and at almost every turn, the combatants were completely tied. I was actually looking forward to using my omnipotent blog-writer tiebreaker powers to call this one for Gobby, but at almost literally the last second Deadpool received an influx of votes, putting him at 60% (9 votes) to Green Goblin's 40% (6 votes).

I wonder if Deadpool himself got a hold of several IP adresses this morning....

Anyway, as always, here's the breakdown. Check back tomorrow!

Amazing Pt. 2

My wife and I saw "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" the other night. I'm going to set up this review the same way as the previous review, since that's how my brain is working to figure these films out (or, rather, my often conflicting opinions and reactions to these films).

Spoilers Ahead

Amazing pt. 1

I did it. I broke down and did it. My wife, surprisingly, really wants to see Amazing Spider-Man 2 while it's in theatres (she almost never wants to see things in theatres). Since we're not watching 2 before 1, I did what I've been avoiding for reasons I've made clear in numerous posts.

I have a lot of complicated and nuanced opinions of this first film, so meet me after the break. Spoilers ahead.

We All Wear Masks....

So for years, I've been dying to dress up as my all-time favorite comic-book character, but nobody sold ready-made costumes and it would be so time-intensive that it was hardly worth it for several years.

Well this year I finally did it. I was the Green Goblin last night for Halloween.

Dig on This

A while back, the Nostalgia Critic did a list of the "Top 11 Dumbest Spider-Man Moments." Regrettably, I watched it again recently because I had forgotten.

Now, he's pretty fair in theory - he likes all three movies, and says that even though they all have these moments, they all have good moments as well. This is true, and this attitude is why I continue to watch and enjoy NC...most of the time. But his list in the end seemed to devolve into the general mindset of adult geeks expecting "serious business" out of something they really shouldn't be (oh yeah, Lucasfilm digs abound).

Now, a couple of points I actually agreed with to a degree (I understand the flags in the first one even if they were shoehorned, being after 9/11 and all, but the other two should really have not gone there). Some I disagreed with, but understood where he was coming from (I don't blame Venom fans for wanting more of him, but his limited screentime made sense and is hardly an objective flaw). But many I thought were missing the point and/or making a subjective issue objective (Never. Insult. Willem. Dafoe. As. Green. Goblin. In. Front. Of. Me).

His number one pick, though, threw me for a loop.

Like What You Wanna Like! Defenses of Underappreciated Films (And More!) Part 1!

Last week I asked you all to write in with media and franchises you love that seem to have a sizable hatedom (aside from I-III, since I always talk about them). I swore that I would talk a little bit about each with the following rules:

1. If I liked it too, I would praise it for its greatness.

2. If I didn't like it, I would be honest with my criticism while still emphasizing both your right to like it and its right to exist, plus finding at least one genuinely nice thing to say about it (and not dismissing it as alltogether "bad" regardless of how I feel).

3. If I haven't seen it, I'll explain why while refusing to pass too much judgement and, again, emphasizing both your right to like it and its right to exist.

You all gave me a lot of great things to talk about that fall into all three categories. You gave me so much that, while I envisioned this as a single post, Blogspot wouldn't let me put all the necessary tags on it requiring me to split it into two. This actually worked out for the best, since about half of the suggestions came from Superhero stuff. I'll start with that and give the rest of you a little more time to suggest more.

Some Spoilers ahead.
