So here's the final update list, and like last time I'm going into slightly more detail. I've upped the number and broke some ties to bring you my
TOP 25 FAVORITE FILMS OF ALL TIME
But first....
Honorable Mentions
Babe
My Neighbor Totoro
I haven't seen these films in a long time, so I don't know where they'd stand in such a list. But I remember them being very influential on me as a child.
Without Further Ado...
25. Sin City (2005)
Previous Rank: Honorable Mention
I stand by what I said about this film last year, but because I've expanded the list I thought it deserved a spot.
24. Little Shop of Horrors (1986)
Previous Rank: 14
This one moves very far down the list because as much as I do love it, I realized I loved some of the others a bit more.
23. Dogma (1998)
Previous Rank: 20
Really, the only reason Dogma was 20 last year was because I wanted to start with a comedy. Still, I stand by what I said about it last year.
22. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)
Previous Rank: Tied at 15
One of the reasons I wanted to redo this list with a higher number was not to add more films but to break some of the hastier ties I made last year, this being the hastiest. I remembered it at the last second and tied it with something higher than it really was. Still love the film.
21. Wreck-It Ralph (2012)
Previous Rank: Tied at 19
One of the three films from the last year on this list, it still deserves to be here but not necessarily higher than...
20. The Fly (1986)
Previous Rank: Honorable Mention
This was my biggest regret of last year's list: Leaving this film off the list proper. I do love this film to death and it deserves higher than just the end.
19. Men in Black series (1997, 2002, 2012)
Previous Ranking: Tied at 15
Favorite Installment: Men in Black (1997)
Still love all three (one and three much more than two), but not as much as the remainder of this list.
18. South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut (1999)
Previous Rank: 16
Another victim of this rearranging. Still an awesome musical.
17. Scott Pilgrim vs The World (2010)
Previous Rank: Tied at 19
But Scottie here moved up a few. 'Nuff said.
16. The Harry Potter Films (2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011)
Previous Rank: 18
Favorite Installment: Philosopher's Stone (2001)/Deathly Hallows (2010-11)
As did Harry. I was too hard on them last year, they really are (mostly) well-done adaptations. I can't decide whether I like the first or last installment best of the film series (once again, Prisoner is my favorite book, but the movie dropped too major a ball to be my favorite of the films - though it's a decent third).
15. Kill Bill (2003, 2004, 20??)
Previous Rank: 17
Favorite Installment: Can't decide.
Apparently Quentin is working on Volume 3. Excite!
14. The Fifth Element (1997)
Previous Rank: 13
Nothing new to say. Still awesome.
13. Pirates of the Caribbean (2003, 2006, 2007, 2011, 2016)
Previous Rank: 12
Favorite Installment: Dead Man's Chest (2006)
Captain Jack will return for "Dead Men Tell No Tales" in 2016, apparently. Can't wait!
12. Raggedy Ann and Andy: A Musical Adventure (1977)
Previous Rank: 10
Sadly, it's no longer in my top 11 based on the other rearrangements. But it will always be a very special movie to me.
11. The Secret of NIMH (1982)
Previous Rank: 11
What's this? A film in the same place this year as last year? Unheard of!
10. Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988)
Previous Rank: 9
Ah, that's more like it.
9. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)/Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Previous Rank: 6 (as "Top 11 Disney Animated Canon")
It's difficult talking about Disney's traditionally animated canon films on a list like this because, as I said last time, they'd make up a majority if I listed them all. I decided my one allowed tie on this new list would be between my top two of the canon, and just imagine the rest of my (previously stated) favorites as a .5 between each of the previous entries.
8. Gremlins films (1984, 1990)
Previous Rank: 8
Favorite Installment: Gremlins (1984)
Anyone seen this?
7. Jurassic Park (1993)
Previous Rank: 7
Once again, not including the sequels here, though I do enjoy them and I can't wait for the next one.
6. The Saga of Middle-Earth (2001, 2002, 2003, 2012, 2013, 2014)
Previous Rank: 5
Favorite Installment: An Unexpected Journey (2012)
Okay, so this isn't an official name for this series, but with The Hobbit becoming a three-part epic like Lord of the Rings before it, we need some kind of brief title to encapsulate all six films. Then again, brevity was never Tolkien's thing...
5. Batman Returns (1992)
Previous Rank: Tied at 4
How the mighty have fallen. This was, for a time, my favorite film. And yet as I refine this list it keeps getting pushed back. Still, I've lost none of my love for it.
4. Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Previous Rank: Tied at 4
Some
3. The Spider-Man Trilogy (2002, 2004, 2007)
Previous Rank: 3
Favorite Installment: Spider-Man (2002)
Things
2. Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Previous Rank: 2
Never
1. The Star Wars Saga (1977, 1980, 1983, 1999, 2002, 2005, 2015, 20??, 20??)
Previous Rank: 1
Favorite Installment: The Phantom Menace (1999)
Change.
