Your Turn

(Originally Written for Jedi News)

This is a call out. This is a call to all I-III lovers out there. And this call is:

HELP!

"You almost got us killed, are you brainless?!"

This week’s article was originally going to be my reaction to George Luicas’ revelation that Disney basically threw out his original treatments for VII-IX and how Sithy that made me feel, but I’m done. I don’t WANT to automatically hate the new films based on what got them made when they’ll probably be at least decent films if not better given the people working on them, and I’m sick of using this column to talk myself down every time news I’m avoiding hits my ears.

This column is about I-III, and about how they’re as much Star Wars as IV-VI. About how they’re good movies in their own right in spite of mainstream media and geekdom’s constant mud-slinging.

But I feel like I’ve made all the arguments a million times over. Every time I think of something new to say, it sounds too similar to things I’ve already spoken about. I feel like I’m just repeating myself over and over again. “Like I said before” has become a common theme.

So that’s why I need your help, dear readers. I know there are things I miss. Things I haven’t considered. Things you’ve been dying to have someone, ANYONE address but somehow nobody ever has.

So please, if you’re out there, if my readership isn’t just a figment of my imagination, contact me. Let me know who you are, and what you want me to address. My e-mail is here, or you could leave a comment below.

"I'm REALLY reaching here..."

This column has been a wonderful opportunity for me, for anyone to have a voice to combat the haterbase. I don’t want to have to step down because I ran out of things to say. Help me continue to spread the positivity.

  1. I really love your work and I'm a huge fan of the prequels. One of the things I think you could discuss in a future article(s) is how the visuals of the films DO, in fact, enhance the story they're telling. This whole complaint about a lot of it being presented in "shot-reverse-shot" wasn't really a problem until Red Letter Media made it one (yes, I sat through all three of his "reviews" and they haven't changed these from being me three favorite movies of all time in the slightest), and while there is a little more of that technique in the prequels than the originals, I still think there's some expert visual direction and symbolism all around in terms of how the shots are angled, the exact moment when a character says a line with his/her back to his/her conversational partner (and sometimes the camera), and especially the way a lot of scenes and character faces are lit. With screenshots added, this could make a compelling article (or maybe more than one).

    1. That's one of the reasons I'd like to do more "Anatomy of a Scene" articles, but they're so time consuming. I've been struggling lately balancing time for myself with work, and as much as I love writing these it IS work. But if things do settle down, definitely expect a lot more in this vein.

  2. Perhaps you could talk more about the Clone Wars and such.

Anyhow, as far as George's comments, I think we need to wait a little longer before we know for sure. I mean, based on all the info that's been released about the development of the film, George's main idea should still exist. And we have to remember that George himself likes to say things "from a certain point of view" and this could be the case of just blatant lying to the press in order to avoid getting asked more questions about Star Wars. And frankly I don't blame him.

Until JJ or someone on Lucasfilm opens his mouth and confirms what George said, based on the other evidence we have, we still can't know for sure where Episode VII really came from.

We'll just have to hope for the best.

(And if George's treatments where really dumped then consider me one less person at the theater)

    1. I've said pretty much what I have to say on Clone Wars until I get a chance to go back and watch the episodes I missed.

And I've said what I have to say on VII until I actually see the thing.

But thank you for always being there and being ready to offer comment. I regret that I haven't been nearly as diligent in reverse.

    2. Thanks my friend.

Anyway, I was doing some thinking and perhaps once topic you haven't really gotten into much discussion is the Wildlife of Star Wars. You've spoken before about your passion for Dinosaurs, so maybe you could delve into that, and maybe even compare some of the creatures we see in Episodes I-III to those of IV-VI
