Let's Play Pokémon FireRed Chapter 21: I'm Just Wild About Saffron

Previously on Pokémon FireRed:

Chapter 21: I'm Just Wild About Saffron

Another job well done.

I feel like we should be playing Beethoven's Pastoral right about now.

They weren't that threatening. What's REALLY amazing is that I HAD to - and not in a good way.

I think I saw your pen pal in Vermilion.

I have a few, but I want to wait to distribute them...

Who?

Oh...

That sounda unfair....

Oh?

Oh

This is amazing.

That's not the line from the movie...

Baku, that's a nice gesture, but I thought I taught you to not be creepy.

I'm...certain he means well.

Ooh, sounds fun!

Binks, are you sure? Well actually...Baku doesn't want to give up Dream Eater, and he does have enough Psychic power to make your Confusion kind of redundant...worth a try for now...

[[Nilbog Notes: Mimic was actually much more useful in Generation 1 where you could actually choose which move you stole in each battle. It's not really worth using in Gen 3 form so it will be replaced at some point, but I always really liked the Copycat (she was coded as older in Gen 1 also) so I wanted to take it here.]]

Thanks for what you did for us.

Beg pardon?

......Is it really that fun for you to copy what I say and do?

.........

You must like Pokémon too, though.

*sigh* No, not ME. I asked YOU.

This is weird...

Now I didn't say that, quit it!

You're editorializing now, though.

I'm taking this!

I am shocked. Shocked.

Giovanni will be brought to justice. If he rears his stupid widow's peak again, I'll be ready...

This must be the old Fighting Gym I read about that was (ironically) muscled out by the Psychic Gym. Let's visit here first.

Wow, this is smaller than Pewter Gym....

Your door was open.

Well that battle flew by. ;)

You just watcched me, don't pretend you didn't see me from over there.

What?

No.

That's nice.

That's...certainly a method....

What? Why? I'm not staying long.

That's just how it goes.

Well, I know who I'm pitting against him.

Did...did you just literally say the word 'grunt'?

Blast them to pieces.

Strong will. I like that.

You actually put up a better fight than I expected. So I know you're not a Gym anymore, so no badge, but do you have like some other sort of like proof of defeat?

Oh I didn't know that was an option, which is why I asked.

Oh! I mean if I wanted a Fighting Type I'd put Thade back in, but I'm not one to turn down a gift of another Pokédex entry.

Hmmm....choices choices...

[[Nilbog Notes:

Hitmonlee
#106
Fighting
Evolves from Tyrogue at Level 20 if the Attack stat is higher than Defense
"When in a hurry, its legs lengthen progressively. It runs smoothly with extra long, loping strides."

Hitmonchan
#107
Fighting
Evolves from Tyrogue at Level 20 if the Defense stat is higher than Attack
"While apparently doing nothing, it fires punches in lightning fast volleys that are impossible to see."

Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan (clearly named after Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan) are the ultimate Fighting Types in a generation that didn't do Fighting Types any favors. Hitmonlee has a decent Attack and learns most of the best Fighting moves, while Hitmonchan has decent Defense and learns all the Elemental punch moves. However, because Hitmonchan has a low Special Attack, he can't make too effective use of them until Gen 4. Hitmonlee is usually not only the best choice for an effective Fighting Type with S.T.A.B. moves, but historically the far more popular Pokémon. That being said, I've always personally thought Hitmonlee was ugly and excruciatingly unappealing and Hitmonchan kind of neat. Therefore...]]

This Master of Disaster has a Creed to follow.

That is how it should be, but sometimes we have to force it along.

I prefer Tai Chi. Anyway...

All righty then. The real challenge begins, I guess.

Hey! You managed to tear yourself away from that casino! Good for you!

Good thing I don't have any in my party anymore (no disrespect to Thade, he carried me a long way)

Ugh, these look like Silph teleporter pads. Oh this is going to suck...

[[Nilbog Notes: The teleporter pads in Saffron Gym can seem daunting to first time players, but there is a simple workaround without looking up which one leads exactly where.

Pick an axis, either horizontal or vertical. Keep going to the pad straight across on whatever axis you choose, and eventually you will reach Sabrina. I suggest picking Horizontal heading towards Sabrina in orde to face the other seven trainers, and Vertical to return to the start as the vertical distance is shorter and thus faster.]]

I already know. Not because of you guys, but because of these pads.

I'm not surprised.

Okay.

Sure you did.

Not really. I have a tapir with a pendulum.

Binks is so cool.

And the Dark.

Oh gee, however could you guess that a Pokémon Trainer in a Pokémon Gym would want to see the Gym Leader? Put that cold reading malarky away.

No you didn't. You made a guess and waited for me to confirm or deny before pouncing.

That's nice.

I'll keep that in mind.

Yes indeedy. Though it helps.

As did I.

Thank...you...?

It is a good move.

I have to say, after all this buildup, I'm slightly nervous. But I'm confident in my abilities. And in Baku's.

Time to fight mind with mind.

Oh did you now?

Was this by chance a plastic spoon?

Interesting line of work if you dislike battling, but I'll make it worth your while.

Outsped and buffed.

Wow, still one hit? I'm glad I got this move.

You're not Psychic! In fact you look Poison-y, which is weak to Psychic!

See?

All right, let's see if you can withstand the shadow.

Nope!

I know how to deal with you.

And down in one shot.

Every single one of you went down in one shot.

Why were people afraid of you?

To be fair, I didn't give you much of a chance.

Thank you.

Whatever you say.

I've taught moves before from Leaders that I later replaced, but this thing...this does not fit at all with how I battle. I'll keep it, but I won't use it. I got the Psychic TM from this city, so I'll just count that instead.

No! Bad! Stay out of there, you have better things to do!

What media? I was never interviewed.

Interesting...

He seemed nice, I guess?

I think the coolness is all thanks to the Pokémon, personally.

I mean I'm also pretty much single-handedly taking down Team Rocket. That should count for something too I think.

You know what, kid? That desire is a good first step.

I'm glad I stopped in here. Puts things in perspective. Gives me some renewed vigor.

Now it's time to earn even more Badges!

[[Nilbog Notes: The next month or so is going to be busy, so even these normal-length or shorter episodes may be late or delayed for a while. But I'll still do the best I can to get them out each weekend if possible. In the meantime, here is our team:

Tune in next week!]]
