Clone Wars 5.13: Point of No Return

Colonel Gascon and D-Squad hitch a ride home on what they think is a Republic cruiser but is in fact a Separatist bomb designed to take out the Republic's top military minds, including the Jedi Council.

This was actually a fairly suspenseful climax to this odd arc. It had some very exciting moments, some sadness at the loss of BZ, and some good ol' Star Wars Humor.

I especially liked how the Buzz Droids were essentially Gremlins. It carries over from their characterization in Sith and was a nice touch.

However....as much as I loved Anakin's reaction and his obvious caring of R2...I sorry, I just cannot stand him in this show. He's too generic and is tearing down what Hayden Christensen established in the film. It almost seems like they're purposefully avoiding Hayden's Vaderisms. Just gets me every time.

D-Squad Post-Mortem

This arc was all over the place, and overall had a lot of good to it. It's great that it wasn't all drama and denseness and showed the gee-whizness that is an essential part of Star Wars.

At the same time, it's not one of my favorite arcs, and that rests solely on Gascon. Even though I found out he was based off a rejected Jar Jar concept, it was still rejected for good reason. He always looked out of place, like he stepped in from a different alien movie (again, like Men in Black). On top of that, he kept ping-ponging as a character. He seemed to learn his lesson about treating the droids equally at the end of each episode, only to go right back to being a jerk at the beginning of the next and have to learn it all over again.

On the other hand, WAC-47 was an interesting contrast and an overall fun character.

I'm upset that we never got to find out exactly what was discovered using the encryption code that was the catalyst for the entire storyline, but in the end it doesn't matter. Like I kept saying, arcs like this that focus on the war effort just underline the futility of all the fighting, because we all know the Clone Wars are merely a smokescreen and no side ever truly has a victory.
